The Write Connection is a series of elementary writing and public speaking programs created in 1997 through the lens of an inner-city elementary schoolteacher who was once a struggling writer. This combination gave her an innate understanding of why her students language arts lessons failed to transfer into their writing. One of the key strategies behind The Write Connection is the integration of the teaching of grammar, mechanics, parts of speech, sentence structure, and so much more with the writing process. Our Daily Lessons also implement multisensory learning, gamification, and write-to-learn. Another crucial element is we provide grade-appropriate science, social studies, and culturally relevant content for writing topics. Multiple researchers have proven these methods to be the most successful for student success. The Write Connection realistically prepares students to learn the writing and public speaking skills that are required for higher education, life, and career.
Studies have shown that Black and Hispanic students traditionally test far below their white and Asian counterparts. But at Bursch Elementary in Compton USD, which is 27% Black and 70% Hispanic, this negative trend was changed by using an innovative program developed by an inner-city teacher.
Bursch was just one of hundreds of schools to implement The Write Connection. The results? Dramatic increases in student achievement. Bursch became a California Distinguished School honoree, an award reserved only for schools that show exemplary progress in achieving academic success at a high level for every student.
